Sarah is a lovely 6.5-year-old, sable and white female Sheltie. She is housebroken and doing well with that on her foster mom's schedule. Sarah MUST ABSOLUTELY HAVE A SECURE, FENCED YARD AND ANOTHER DOG IN THE FAMILY, with no exceptions. She is very noise-sensitive and will run if frightened, so she is not allowed off-leash outside of the fenced yard and must have a martingale-type collar. Sarah is still very shy about human contact, but is making progress. She needs another Sheltie in her new home to help her learn the routine and to offer her the comfort level she deserves. Sarah really likes other dogs and is uncomfortable if she doesn't know where all the other dogs in the home are.
Sarah walks well on a leash, but, occasionally, will have “melt-downs”, where she fights the leash. The answer to that is for the human to just stand there, call her name softly and redirect her. She has a tendency to circle when stressed or uncertain, which is a sign of anxiety and, again, redirecting her will help to mitigate the circling and anxiety. This lovely girl behaves well in a crate, in the house or in the car. Off-leash, Sarah does not readily come in the house, but her foster mom has propped the door open and will wait out-of-sight for her to come in - and she will come in.
Sarah loves to play. Her foster mom thinks this will be key to her relationship with her human. She will chase frisbees and tennis balls, just won't bring them back yet. She loves playing with the other dogs in her foster home and does love to pull their tails. Interestingly enough,
Sarah will sit in your lap and enjoys the petting, even tho’ she doesn't initiate getting in your lap. Sarah will try to test you, but telling her, "No, Ma'am" will get her attention.
Sarah doesn't totally trust us humans, so she will need an experienced, Sheltie-savvy person with a lot of patience, compassion and love.
